The master bedroom is the largest sleeping chamber in a home and usually belongs to whomever is the owner of the house. For larger homes with a square footage between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet, the average square footage of the average size primary bedroom usually ranges between 200 to 300 square feet. Average Size Of Master Bedroom

If you want to optimize the usage of your bedroom space, all you need to do is to follow the golden ratio of three to one (3:1). The ratio of 3:1 will guide you on what size of mattress will naturally fit with the size of your room. The first thing is to know the square footage of your preferred bed or mattress size then multiply it by three and the product is the approximate recommended size of your room.

  • Twin – 20.3 sq. ft.
  • Twin XL – 21.7 sq. ft.
  • Full – 28.1 sq. ft.
  • Queen – 33.33 sq.ft.
  • King – 42.2 sq.ft
  • California King – 42 sq.ft

For example, if you prefer to have a king size bed which has a square footage of 42.2 square feet, multiply it by 3 which is equal to 126.6 sq. ft.. Therefore, if you have a room that has dimensions of around 10 feet x 12 feet (120 square feet), having a standard king size bed will definitely fit. However, if the size of your primary room is 144 sq. ft. or with dimensions of 12 feet x 12 feet, a king mattress will fit perfectly in your spacious room and still have a lot of room for other furniture.

Other Important Information

You now have an idea on what room size can accommodate a specific size of mattress in order for you and your loved ones to have a comfortable living space. Below are the other factors that your need to consider:

Does The Recommended Room Size Include A Closet?

The simple answer is no. The bedroom’s square footage does not include the closet space. Usually it  comes with a nice sized closet or a walk-in closet which increases the overall footprint of the entire house. When planning your room layout, it is always smart to give importance to the livable area.

Clearance Space Around The Bed

You should have a clearance space around the bed of at least 30 inches on either side and another 30 inches of clearance space at the foot of the bed. The minimum clearance space will give you and your loved ones an ability to move around within the room with ease. If there is much space and you want to have maximum comfort, provide a clearance space of three feet around each side of the bed. This will give your bedchamber an open and relaxing feel which is very essential in every room.

Think Of Pathways

It is crucial to give the most importance to the pathway aside from the size of your room, closet and bed. Do not even entertain the thought of blocking the natural pathways through the room and most especially to the bathroom. This will help you and your loved ones to walk with ease from place to place plus it will also help to avoid the chances of having an accidental injury.

Small Homes Mean Small Master Bedrooms

If your home is a smaller size, as much as you want a spacious sleeping chamber, you will need to accept the fact that you can only have a small master bedroom. Therefore, you will also need to choose a smaller size bed. The most important aspect of any bedroom is not actually the size of the room or the size of bed but it should reflect the idea of having a perfect relationship which exudes calmness, balance, peace and harmony.

You can achieve this simply by using a strong symmetry such as matching narrow nightstands, lamps and pillows. You can also utilize mirrors and mounted lights to free up the ceiling space which will create an open and airy feeling. Of course, do not overcrowd your small bedroom with furniture, dressers or mattress that is too big for the space. All unnecessary furniture and clutter should not be kept inside your room. As much as possible keep your room simple and neat. By doing these things, your small master bedroom will have a cozy atmosphere.

Where Should You Position The Bed?

Typically your bed should be positioned on the longest wall facing the door. This will allow the best traffic flow and also allow your bed to be the first thing people see from the doorway. This is also the reason why your bed is considered as the room’s focal point.
