The cooked or uncooked veggie burgers also freeze well for up to 3 months. This is the reason why this veggie burgers becomes a freezer staple in my home.
How I Make Veggie Patties
The following are key steps to have a compact and firm Black Bean and Chickpea Burger:
- You need to thoroughly rinse the beans and chickpeas and partially dry out both of them by putting them in a separate lined baking sheet.
- Bake the black beans at 325 degrees F for 15 minutes or until they are slightly dried out. Do not skip this step for the black beans because it will prevent the black beans from being mushy. For the chickpeas you just need to air dry on the baking sheet, no need to bake them.
After these steps, all you need to do is to put your food processor to work. Start with the oats and pulse on high until the oats become the consistency of flour. Pour the blended oats into a large mixing bowl. Then place the black bean or chickpeas into the food processor, season with a pinch of salt and pepper, pulse a few times and pour the blended beans or chickpeas into the bowl with blended oats. Repeat this step for the bell pepper, onions and garlic. Then add the remaining ingredients into the mixture. Mix them all together until all of the ingredients are incorporated.
Scoop the mixture using a 1/3 measuring cup and place it on the parchment lined baking sheet and lightly press down to form into perfectly burger shaped patties. You can make a total of 11 patties from this mixture, then bake at 375 degrees F for 10 minutes then flip over and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
I will also share with you the physical order of the different toppings I use for my veggie burger. I believe that a good combination of ingredients will dramatically enhance each of the other flavors which will result in a satisfying and delicious burger.
One of my favorite toppings for these burgers is onion, however my husband never likes any raw onion in his food. So one day, I decided to bake the onion and bacon in the same baking sheet. This is done after I bake the black bean and chickpea patties. My main purpose is to infuse the onions with bacon grease while cooking them on the same baking sheet. The result was amazing! Since then, caramelized onions infused with bacon grease has become a staple burger topping in our household.
My Favorite Burger Toppings: Good for 2 Veggie Burgers
- For Caramelized onions and Bacon- I place 1/2 of the whole red onion which is thinly sliced onto a parchment lined baking sheet together with 2 bacon strips. I drizzle the onion with 1/2 tbsp. of olive oil and season with a pinch of salt and pepper. I then bake them after I bake the black bean and chickpea burger at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes or until the onions are caramelized and the bacon is cooked through. Then I set aside.
- For Burger Sauce – In a small bowl, I pour 1/3 cup of ketchup and 1 tbsp. of sriracha and season with a pinch of salt, a pinch of garlic powder and a pinch of onion powder. I hen stir to combine and set it aside.
- For Other Toppings – I use 2 whole compari tomatoes and cut each tomato into 3 slices, 4 thinly sliced pieces of cucumber, 2 slices of provolone cheese and 1 tbsp of crumbled feta cheese.
How I Build My Easy Baked Black Burger and Chickpea Burgers
- Place one slice of the provolone cheese on top of the bottom of the Pretzel Bun.
- Then spread the burger sauce on top of the provolone cheese. I add the burger patty and top with caramelized onions, feta cheese, 2 slices of cucumber, bacon and finally the 3 slices of tomatoes.
- Top it off with top of the pretzel bun and cover the whole burger with aluminum foil. Then bake at 375 degrees F for 6 to 8 minutes.
- Serve the burger while still warm!
