Chinese Barbecue Style Braised Pork Belly Recipe: Easy Asian Dish

My Chinese Barbecue Style Braised Pork Belly Recipe is an Easy Asian Dish cooked on a low temperature also known as simmering.

The creation of this Chinese Barbecue Pork Belly Recipe started when I wanted to explore the use of my Filipino Adobe sauce that I used for my Filipino Chicken Adobo with Sriracha recipe. The idea of using Filipino Adobo sauce came into my mind because I was feeling a bit patriotic at that time and I believe that Filipino Adobo really makes any meat delicious.

Adobo is one of my favorite Filipino dishes and I wanted to use my Adobo sauce in another dish besides my traditional Filipino Adobo dish.  After looking at a few recipes for inspiration, I came across a Chinese Pork Belly Barbecue recipe. The ingredients are quite similar to my version of Adobo sauce so I decided to make my own version of this famous Chinese dish using my Filipino Adobo sauce and the result was incredibly delicious.

Spoiler Alert! Do not be discouraged by the numerous number of seasonings and long cooking time. Most of the recipes for Chinese Barbecue Pork Belly will require you to be patient because you need to marinade the meat for at least 24 hours and up to 48 hours. My recipe is actually an easy Asian dish and has a way shorter meal preparation time. You just need to combine all the Barbecue sauce ingredients in a bowl. Stir fry the garlic and ginger and add pork and pour in the mixture and let it simmer for 1.5 hours or until the pork is tender. And that’s it! There are no complicated cooking procedures for this easy Asian recipe.

Pork Belly is actually one of my favorite meats although it’s quite the opposite for my husband. In spite of that, he can’t deny that my easy  pork belly recipe is delicious. It is also a versatile dish because you can serve this easy pork belly recipe in 3 different ways:

  1. Served with the Stir Fried Glass Noodles.
  2. Chop into small slices and fill each steamed bun with cucumber slices and a sprinkle of sliced scallions.
  3. Served my easy pork belly recipe over steamed rice  and vegetables.

If you are a big Chinese take out fan, this is definitely worth trying because it is easy to make and is definitely not short on flavor!

Ingredients
  

  • 2 lb pork belly
  • 2 inch fresh ginger peeled and smashed
  • 5 gloves garlic peeled and smashed
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

BBQ Sauce Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 1/2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/2 tbsp sriracha
  • 2 pcs. dried bay leaf
  • 1/2 tbsp peppercorn
  • 1/3 cup Hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp five spice or 1/2 tsp. all spice
  • 2 tbsp honey

Instructions
 

  • In a medium size bowl, combine all of the BBQ sauce ingredients and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a dutch oven over medium heat and add the ginger and garlic. Stir fry them until fragrant, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Add the pork belly, BBQ sauce mixture and 1/2 cup of water into the dutch oven. Cover and bring to a boil. Turn the heat to medium to low. Simmer for about 1.5 hours or until the pork is tender. Flip the pork belly at least once or twice during the whole process to avoid burning and add more water if needed.
  • Uncover the pan, remove the pork belly and put on the serving plate. Then set it aside.
  • Let the sauce cook until its thickened.
  • Strain the sauce directly to the meat.
  • Serve with rice, stir fry Asian glass noodles or steamed buns.
